Kristi Kazar creates imagined landscapes that explore the limits of perception and the possibility of what might exist beyond them.

Her work is rooted in one of our oldest human impulses: to search for pattern and meaning in things we cannot fully understand. Just as people have looked to the night sky for thousands of years and turned scattered stars into stories and constellations, Kristi is interested in that same instinct to find meaning in what we see.

Her latest series draws on the idea of umwelt: that every living creature experiences only a partial version of reality, shaped by the limits of its own perception. Kristi became interested in what might exist beyond that partial view, and in how a place might feel if the familiar rules of reality shifted slightly. Her landscapes sit somewhere between the recognisable and the impossible, familiar enough to trust and strange enough to question.

Her paintings often begin long before she enters the studio. Kristi draws inspiration from moments in daily life that create an immediate, visceral response: an unexpected colour relationship, a shape, a particular quality of light or the balance of a composition. When something creates that instinctive pull, she knows there is something in it worth carrying into a painting.

Each work begins as an abstract field of colour and light rather than a predetermined landscape. She builds and blends the layers until the atmosphere feels right, then starts to find the place within it, allowing rock, water and horizon to emerge from what began as pure abstraction.

Light appears repeatedly across her horizons as a symbol of possibility. If what we perceive is only ever partial, perhaps our understanding of what is possible is partial too.
